Top Leagues

The Dutch Eredivisie had a wild and exciting weekend of soccer, full of goals, surprises, and big performances. For fans of Dutch football, it was one of those days where almost every game had a storyline. From the Go Ahead Eagles celebrating their first win of the season, to NAC Breda sneaking a late equalizer against Twente, to Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord all doing their jobs at the top—it was a round worth remembering. Let’s break it all down in simple, middle school-friendly style.

Go Ahead Eagles 3 – 0 FC Volendam

The Eagles finally soar!

Before this match, the Go Ahead Eagles were struggling. They had played four games without a single victory—three draws and one defeat. But on this rainy afternoon in Deventer, everything finally clicked for them.

The game actually had to be delayed because of torrential rain, which made the pitch difficult to play on at first. But once the whistle blew, the Eagles wasted no time showing they were ready to win. In just the fifth minute, Danish youngster Jakob Breum scored the opening goal. Scoring so early in a game is always a huge confidence boost. Did you know that in soccer, about 15% of goals in professional leagues come within the first 15 minutes? Starting strong can make a huge difference.

Only ten minutes later, Swedish striker Victor Edvardsen doubled the lead. That made it 2–0, and the home crowd was going wild. Just before halftime, Belgian winger Mathis Suray made it 3–0 with a confident finish. By the break, the game looked almost decided.

In the second half, FC Volendam tried to come back. They took 16 shots, but only one was on target. That shows how important accuracy is in soccer. Having lots of chances doesn’t matter if you can’t get them on frame. Their finishing problems meant Go Ahead Eagles’ goalkeeper Jari De Busser had a quiet night in the second half.

For Go Ahead Eagles, this was a massive relief. Not only did they grab their first win of the season, but they also did it with style and confidence. Their next challenge is a big one: the IJsselderby against rivals PEC Zwolle. For Volendam, the wait for their first win continues. They’ll try again next week against Excelsior, another recently promoted side.

FC Twente 2 – 2 NAC Breda

NAC strike late to spoil Twente’s night.

This was one of the most dramatic games of the weekend. FC Twente, one of the bigger clubs in the Netherlands, were desperate to get their first win of the season. They even fired their manager Joseph Oosting after a poor start—three losses in their first four games. The new beginning didn’t go as planned, though, because NAC Breda came to Enschede and grabbed a point in the last minutes.

The match started with a shock. Just three minutes in, NAC’s Mohamed Nassoh scored from close range, giving the visitors the lead. For Twente fans, it felt like more of the same misery.

Twente struggled to respond. Sometimes in soccer, when a team is under pressure, it can take a long time to regain rhythm. Finally, in the 64th minute, their new signing Marko Pjaca—a Croatian forward who once played in a World Cup final with Croatia—scored the equalizer. It was a classy finish into the far corner.

Things got even better for Twente in the 87th minute, when veteran striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored from the penalty spot. It looked like Twente had done it at last. But soccer can be cruel—especially in the final minutes.

In the 91st minute, NAC midfielder Raul Paula smashed in a near-post goal to make it 2–2. The NAC fans went crazy, and Twente’s players couldn’t believe it. Once again, their first win slipped away.

Now Twente will have to try again next week when they travel to Rotterdam to face Sparta. NAC Breda, on the other hand, will be happy with the point, and they’ll look to add another win at home against Heracles Almelo.

Fun fact: Did you know that stoppage time goals (after the 90th minute) are sometimes called “Fergie Time” goals? That nickname comes from legendary Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, whose teams often scored very late. Paula’s goal definitely felt like a Fergie Time moment.

Ajax 3 – 1 PEC Zwolle

Ajax, one of the “Big Three” clubs in the Netherlands, got the job done at home once again. A strong first-half performance sealed their third home victory of the season. With their young squad improving week by week, Ajax look set to challenge for the top places again.

NEC 3 – 5 PSV

This was the goal fest of the weekend. Eight goals in one game! PSV, the reigning champions, showed both their attacking power and some defensive weaknesses. Winning 5–3 away at NEC is still impressive, though, and they stay near the top of the league. PSV’s attacking style is famous, and games involving them often see Over 2.5 Goals (which means at least three total goals in a match). This game definitely lived up to that trend.

Feyenoord 1 – 0 sc Heerenveen

The reigning champions from Rotterdam, Feyenoord, had a tighter game. It was a match filled with drama, including two red cards. But they still found a way to win 1–0. That result keeps them perfect this season—five wins from five games.

Big Picture: What This All Means

The Eredivisie is always exciting, with goals flying in and upsets waiting around the corner. This weekend showed why Dutch soccer is so much fun to watch:

  • Go Ahead Eagles proved they can win big games and head into a derby with confidence.

  • FC Twente continue to struggle despite their talent, and their season could get messy if they don’t find wins soon.

  • NAC Breda showed heart and fight, proving they can compete with bigger clubs.

  • Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord—the traditional Big Three—remained strong, showing why they usually dominate the league.

Soccer fact: The Dutch Eredivisie is one of the highest-scoring leagues in Europe. On average, matches see about 3 goals per game, which is more than in Italy’s Serie A or Spain’s La Liga. That’s why it’s so popular among fans who love attacking football.

Eredivisie

As the season continues, the battles at both ends of the table will heat up. Can PSV defend their title? Will Feyenoord or Ajax knock them off the top? Can Twente bounce back? And will teams like Go Ahead Eagles and NAC fight their way into safe mid-table positions?

For now, the weekend belonged to the Eagles’ first victory, NAC’s last-gasp equalizer, and the continued power of the Big Three.
