Qatar Makes History! Coach Julen Lopetegui Leads Team to First-Ever World Cup Qualification Through the Group Stages

For the first time in history, Qatar’s national soccer team has officially qualified for the World Cup through the preliminaries, and fans all around the country are celebrating!

Qatar Makes History

The team made history with a 2–1 victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday night in Doha. The win meant that Qatar finished first in Group A of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) fourth-round qualifiers, ahead of strong teams like the UAE and Oman.

After the final whistle, Qatar’s coach Julen Lopetegui couldn’t hide his excitement. “We made history and entered through the grand gate,” he said proudly. “I’ve won many titles before, but this experience with Qatar is truly special. The dream has come true.”

Lopetegui, a former Spanish goalkeeper who once led Sevilla FC to win the 2020 Europa League, called this moment one of the greatest achievements of his career.

A Second World Cup for Qatar

This isn’t Qatar’s first time at the World Cup — but it’s the first time they qualified through the actual qualifiers. In 2022, they played as the host nation, which meant they automatically entered the tournament. However, before that, Qatar had tried to qualify 11 times and failed each time.

Now, after years of hard work, their persistence has paid off. With this win, Qatar has proven that they can earn their place among the world’s best teams — not just host them.

“This means a lot to us,” said midfielder Abdulaziz Hatem. “It’s the first time Qatar qualifies through the qualifiers. It’s a reward for all of us.”

The victory over the UAE was extra special because it came after a tough 0–0 draw against Oman. That draw gave Qatar the one point they needed to stay ahead, but the team knew they had to win against the UAE to secure the top spot.

When the final whistle blew, fans at the Khalifa International Stadium erupted in joy, waving maroon and white flags and singing the national anthem.

 Match Highlights: Qatar 2–1 UAE

The match was intense from the start. Both teams played with high energy, knowing that a World Cup ticket was on the line.

After a goalless first half, Boualem Khoukhi gave Qatar the lead early in the second half with a powerful header after a corner kick. The stadium roared as fans jumped to their feet.

A few minutes later, Pedro Miguel doubled the lead with a low shot past the UAE goalkeeper. The UAE managed to score once in the 87th minute, but it wasn’t enough to stop Qatar’s celebration.

When the referee blew the final whistle, players hugged each other, and Lopetegui raised his hands in triumph. The team had done it — Qatar were World Cup bound!

A Look Back: Qatar’s Soccer Journey

Qatar’s soccer journey has been full of challenges. For years, they were seen as underdogs in Asian football. But over the past decade, the country has invested heavily in sports development and youth training.

The Aspire Academy, founded in 2004 in Doha, played a huge role in building the new generation of Qatari players. Many of today’s national team stars, like Akram Afif and Almoez Ali, trained there as teenagers.

That investment paid off in 2019 when Qatar shocked the world by winning the AFC Asian Cup. They beat Japan 3–1 in the final — a stunning victory that marked their rise as a football power in Asia.

Since then, the team has continued to improve. Under Lopetegui’s guidance, they’ve focused on teamwork, quick passing, and tactical discipline.

Soccer News: The Asian Qualifiers So Far

Qatar isn’t the only Asian country celebrating. Alongside them, Saudi Arabia also secured qualification after beating Iraq in Group B in Jeddah.

That means both Qatar and Saudi Arabia will join Japan, South Korea, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Jordan — all of whom had already qualified earlier.

In total, Asia will send eight teams to the World Cup, which will be held next summer. The draw for the tournament is expected to take place in December, where will learn who they’ll face in the group stage.

Fans are already dreaming of a possible matchup with big football nations like Argentina, Brazil, France, or Spain.

 Coach Lopetegui’s Magic Touch

Julen Lopetegui deserves a lot of credit for this success. The Spanish coach has had an impressive career, coaching big clubs like Real Madrid and Sevilla, and even managing Spain’s national team for a short time.

When he took over Qatar last year, many fans were unsure what to expect. But Lopetegui quickly built trust in the locker room. He encouraged players to stay disciplined and believe in their own ability.

“I told them from day one: you have to believe,” Lopetegui said after the game. “We faced difficult moments, but the players never gave up.”
