Gianni Infantino Says the New FIFA Club World Cup Is the Start of a “New Era” in Football

FIFA Club World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said that the new, expanded Club World Cup marks the beginning of a “new era” in football. The tournament kicks off this Saturday with Inter Miami facing Egyptian team Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium in the United States.

In a recent interview, Infantino compared this moment to the first-ever FIFA World Cup held back in 1930. “It’s a big step for football,” he said. “A little bit like when the very first World Cup happened almost 100 years ago. Everyone remembers that tournament. That’s why this one is also historic.”

The new Club World Cup will feature 32 teams from all continents, similar to the FIFA World Cup for national teams. This gives clubs from Africa, Asia, North and South America, Europe, and Oceania a chance to compete on the world stage.

A Big Opportunity for Clubs Everywhere

In the past, most major football competitions focused on teams from Europe and South America. But Infantino believes it’s time for a change. “We want to be more inclusive,” he said. “We want to give chances to clubs from all over the world to play and shine.”

He also said that football is called the “number one sport in the world,” but many of the top teams and players come from just a few countries. With the new Club World Cup, that’s going to change. “This is about making football truly global,” Infantino added.

Giving More Players a Global Stage

One special thing about the Club World Cup is that it gives players from more than 80 different countries the chance to show their talent on a big stage. Many of these players come from countries that have never played in a World Cup for national teams.

Infantino shared an example from football history: George Weah, a great player from Liberia, won the Ballon d’Or (the award for best player in the world) in the 1990s. He never got the chance to play in a World Cup for his country, but in today’s Club World Cup, a player like him could shine and make his nation proud.

Concerns About Too Many Matches

Some fans and coaches have raised concerns about the football calendar getting too full, with too many matches being played each year. But Infantino believes that once the tournament starts, people will understand why it matters.

“I believe that once the ball starts rolling, people will see how special this tournament is,” he said. “It’s something the whole world will enjoy.”

Ticket Prices and Student Discounts

There has also been some criticism about how FIFA is handling ticket prices. Some people say the prices are too high, while others say they’re too low. In the U.S., where the matches are being held, ticket prices change based on how many people are buying them — this is called “dynamic pricing.”

Infantino defended FIFA’s decision to give special ticket discounts to students in Miami. “When I was a student, I didn’t have much money,” he said. “If someone gave me a chance to watch a World Cup match for a low price, I would have loved it.”

He added, “We don’t want to see empty seats in the stadium. We want full stands and excited fans.”

A Billion-Dollar Deal

Despite some early doubts, the tournament has already been a success when it comes to money. FIFA signed a global broadcasting deal with DAZN, a streaming service, which is said to be worth around $1 billion. According to Infantino, all of the money made from the tournament will be reinvested back into football around the world.

He also pointed out that many matches will be available to watch for free on DAZN. “Tell me another major tournament where you can watch games for free,” he said. “This is something unique.”

How Will Success Be Measured?

When asked how he would judge if the tournament was a success, Infantino gave a heartfelt answer. “I’ll feel it in my heart,” he said. “But if we look at things like the number of fans, how many countries are represented, the economic impact, and the excitement from supporters — I already feel positive.”

He believes that after the tournament ends, even the people who were unsure at the beginning will see its value.

Safety Comes First

The Club World Cup is taking place in different cities in the United States. One of the venues is close to Los Angeles, a city where there have recently been protests and problems connected to immigration issues. Some people have worried about whether it will be safe for fans to attend games.

Infantino said that safety is FIFA’s top priority. “We’re keeping a close eye on what’s going on, and we’re working with the authorities to make sure everything is safe for fans,” he said. “We want everyone to enjoy football in a secure and welcoming environment.”

A Tournament with Big Dreams

FIFA’s new Club World Cup is more than just another football tournament. It’s about bringing the sport to a global level, giving clubs and players from every corner of the world a chance to shine. It’s also about including fans who have never had the chance to cheer for their team on such a big stage.

Infantino hopes this tournament will become a big part of football history — just like the first World Cup in 1930. “This is the beginning of something really special,” he said.

And for the fans, it’s a chance to witness history — with exciting matches, international teams, and maybe even a few surprises along the way. The FIFA Club World Cup, under the leadership of President Gianni Infantino, stands as a pivotal event in football history. This global football competition not only showcases top-tier talent but also provides a platform for fans to engage with the sport at its pinnacle. With reasonable ticket prices, the tournament ensures that enthusiasts from all walks of life can be part of this unforgettable experience.
